Saldenah Band Launch

Last Saturday evening Saldenah Mas-K Club held there highly anticipated band launch for their 2013 theme Heaven & Earth for Toronto Caribbean Carnival. The launch was held at the Kool Haus, a venue reputable as being used for many of Toronto’s most popular and highly attended events  and concerts.  Attendance at Saldenah’s launch was no exception, with loyal Saldenah patrons, media, and mas supports coming out to view the launch.

While waiting for the big reveal, the djs had the audience swaying to the sweet sounds of soca. That evening not only was the audience in store for a costume display, there were also several surprise give-a- ways from the band’s sponsors. Western Union, one of the band’s sponsors, supplied several of the give-a-ways. Excitedly the audience outreached their hands to try to be the lucky person to catch one of the memorabilia that were being thrown into the crowd. Two huge prizes from Caribbean Airlines and Saldenah were further highlights of the evening. Upon entry into the venue, each person was directed to submit their ticket stub and receive a raffle ticket in exchange. To our surprise these tickets were used for special draws! The first draw was a prize from Caribbean Airlines, which was air travel anywhere in the Caribbean. The second draw was to win a free costume from Saldenah!

With an added sense of excitement and anticipation in the air, the launch officially started just before 1am. The launch opener was a tribute presentation to Saldenah Mas K-club of a costume designed by DesigningDARYL called Sandstorm. Apart from the costume being absolutely stunning, there was an added sense of appreciation towards this costume being showcased, being that the designer is from Boston and was able to display his in light of the tragedy that had occurred the previous week.

The presentation proceeded with display of 16 beautiful sections. Eman, Dr. Jay and SKF, did a great job announcing the section names as the models strut their stuff down the runway.  With various options to choose from, potential masqueraders interested in playing mas with Saldenah definitely have their hands full of choosing their section!  Dr. Jay’s section Tidal Wave, for example, made a huge splash with spectators with its vibrant blue hues. While the Angel of Beauty section dazzled, with a gorgeous combination of purples and pinks and featured a frontline section with wings and a unique yet sexy arm and leg band.  The showstopper of the evening was a design from Melinda Rickson with her section Princess of the Gates. When the ultra-frontline costume emerged from backstage, you could hear the ooo’s and ahhh’s from the crowd.

The final minutes of the launch was a display of true celebration. Balloons and confetti fell from the above as the models chipped their way down the runway for one last wine. It was the perfect opportunity to see the costumes in action, and from judging from the faces of the models, they seemed to be having an amazing time! Overall good job Saldenah on your 2013 launch.

Saldenah’s official website launches on Tuesday evening, and the grand opening of their mas camp is Saturday May 4th. For more information on Saldenah check out their website at http://www.saldenahcarnival.com/.

Event: Toronto Reggae Ska Explosion – May 4

For those of you who don’t know, Ska is a genre of music that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s, and was the foundation for the rock steady and reggae that became immensely popular years later. Ska combines elements of calypso, jazz and rhythm and blues. Artists like Bob Marley, Lee “Scratch” Perry and The Wailers began their careers as ska artists, turning a simple genre into a cultural revolution.

Toronto celebrates that illustrious history with the Toronto Reggae Ska Explosion on Saturday, May 4 at the Phoenix Concert Theatre. Special guests hailing from Jamaica to across the pond in the United Kingdom will be performing, including  legends such as Big Youth, Dawn Penn, Dennis Alcapone and Delroy Williams.

They will be accompanied by local ska bands Dizzy & the Arsenals and the Jason Wilson Band.

For more information visit the event page on Facebook at http://on.fb.me/ZaCIFD or to purchase tickets go to  www.ticketweb.ca. In the meantime, get acquainted with some legendary ska music!

Who is Major Lazer…

After making their television debut on Late Night with  Jimmy Fallon a few weeks ago, and with a few appearances at this year’s Coachella,  Major Lazer is making moves to become one of the biggest acts this summer. A music project made up of  American DJ’s, Diplo and Jillionaire, and Walshy Fire of the famous Jamaican soundcrew, Black Chiney, Major Lazer can be described as a fusion of rap, reggae and rock.

The music video for their latest single titled Bumaye (Watch out for this) is from the group’s recent compilation Free The Universe and was shot in the heart of Jamaica. The single also features local reggae sensation, Busy Signal.

What makes this new video stand out from the rest is that it revolves around a ’90s dancehall theme. For many, including me, dancehall was born in the 90s with artists like Shabba Ranks and Beenie Man. They were some of the first to be heard on mainstream radio and in many ways, paved the way or the Vybz Kartel’s and Movado’s of the world, who now flood the genre and the airwaves. The ’90s were an inspirational and iconic period for dancehall, and this is shown beautifully in both the song and the video.

The result is not only the frontrunner for one of the year’s best dancehall video’s, but also a piece of  work that will sit nicely next to the classic videos that inspired it. Take a look for yourself!

New Tunes: Trinidad James – Females Welcomed

Molly poppin, Trinidad James is back at it with his new video Females Welcome. The Trinidad born artist filmed the new video in Trinidad during carnival season, where he provided live at Machel Monday. Some of the locals aren’t too happy about how the twin islands were represented in the video, comments on one local site stating that it makes “carnival look like a strip club”….

So Limers, what do you think? A true depiction of Trinidad? Or a gross misinterpretation?

The Williams Mill Visual Arts Centre Presents: Bahamas Treasure

Hey Limers,

Here at Toronto Lime, we love to celebrate and share the talent of the islands and Bahamian artist Sheldon Saint is no exception.

A native of Grand Bahama, Sheldon Saint has trekked to Canada, facing sub-zero temperatures to showcase his new work at acclaimed art gallery, William Mills Visual Arts Centre in Halton Hills, just a quick drive west of Toronto.

Over a dozen of Saint’s works are on exhibit in the main gallery of the centre, including two of his masterpieces Cathy’s Dress and Old Shoes, both recent international award winners.

A quick Google search, and you can see that his art truly portrays the colourful, vibrant lifestyle of the Caribbean  In his work he successfully portrays the true essence of island life, bringing to canvas scenes that are often taken for granted for those who live their lives everyday on the island.

To see for yourself some of Sheldon Saint’s beautiful paintings, his exhibit will be on display until February 3rd. Or visit www.williamsmill.com for more information.
